High Timberline

In comparison to the Rockies, the Appalachian range is diminutive. The mountains are carved down by glaciers, by weather, and by the march of time. They are also far older. The northern Appalachians, such as the Green Mountains of Vermont, The White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the solitary monadnock of Katahdin in Maine, have secrets folded away in their valleys, stories in their rivers, and history in their stones. They are home to flora and fauna that exist nowhere else on the planet, represent sacred places to indigenous tribes, and are settings of real life legends of heroism and tragedy. These are selections from an ongoing project photographing these mountains as they are best experienced, on foot, subject to their full harshness and beauty.
